The five people convicted in the killing the former Constabulary, now PNP, Col. Rolando Abadilla have sought presidential clemency last Thursday.
The families of Lenido Lumanog, SPO2 Cesar Fortuna, Joel de Jesus, Rameses de Jesus and Augusto Santos have written to Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to help them in their request for presidential clemency.
Secretary De Lima commented yesterday in an ambush interview that the DOJ was “seriously studying that [letter for pardon].”
“I think that since they no longer have any remedy because the Supreme Court has denied their Motion for Reconsideration, so their only is pardon,” De Lima added in Filipino.
De Lima also said she knows the case very well since she was still at the Commission on Human Rights.
In their letter addressed to De Lima, the convicts, dubbed as the “Abadilla 5”, pleaded that they have been imprisoned in the Muntinlupa maximum detention jail for 15 years for a crime they did not commit.
Furthermore, they know they cannot get any justice anymore because the Supreme Court upheld their conviction with finality last Feb. 8.
In addition, they said the whole world knows they did not do any wrong because the Alex Boncayao Brigade communist hit squad has come forward and owned up to having killed Abadilla.
De Lima concluded: “But since the case is already finished there is nothing that we can do but for humanitarian purposes. Maybe they will be given help by recommending for their pardon.”
